Ripple effect of Katrina hits bauxite industry
The ripple effect of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the southern United States has reached Jamaica's bauxite/alumina industry.

Century Aluminium Company which is part owner of the St. Ann Bauxite Limited in Jamaica has reported that its Gramercy alumina refinery in Louisiana, has lost production days because of shipping delays caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The Gramercy, Louisiana refinery, which produces 3,000 tonnes of alumina per day, also gets some of its supplies from its Jamaican plant.

A Reuters report says St. Ann Bauxite is operating without delay.

However, the report quoted a spokesperson for St. Ann Bauxite as saying there could be minor delays if the shipping route in Mississippi remains closed.
